Monterey Jazz Festival and Inns of Monterey Celebrate Six Years of Partnership Supporting Jazz Education

Monterey, Calif.; February 2, 2016; In 2016, Monterey Jazz Festival and Inns of Monterey will celebrate their sixth year of partnership supporting the Festival’s core education programs in Monterey County: MJF in the Schools, (formally known as the Traveling Clinicians Program), the Next Generation Jazz Festival, and the Summer Jazz Camp. The Inns of Monterey generously provides accommodations to the internationally-known jazz teaching artists Monterey Jazz Festival brings to the area each year who teach and engage thousands of students throughout the County.

Visiting over 20 schools in Monterey County for a week each month during the academic year since 1983, the MJF in the Schools clinicians have nurtured and grown the music programs, students, and their teachers in Monterey, Carmel, Salinas, Watsonville, King City, Soledad, Seaside, Pacific Grove, and Greenfield. Each year, 800 students participate in this core program.

The Next Generation Jazz Festival, held in the city of Monterey since 1971 in the spring, also brings internationally-known jazz artists and the Festival’s Artist-In-Residence to adjudicate, teach, and provide masterclasses to the nation’s top bands, with some 1,300 students coming to Monterey from around the country for three days.

The Festival now features over 120 back-to-back performances from over 80 groups. This year’s Next Generation Jazz Festival will take place April 8-10 at the Monterey Conference Center Pavilion, and in locations throughout downtown Monterey. The festival will feature the three-time GRAMMY Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader, Terri Lyne Carrington.

The Summer Jazz Camp, a two-week immersive experience for 150-200 local students since 1984, also brings top educators and artists to Monterey County in June.

“Without the significant support of the Inns of Monterey, we wouldn’t have the ability to have such a deep impact on students throughout the county,” said Colleen Bailey, Managing Director of Monterey Jazz Festival. “This is a model for how corporate and non-profit partnerships benefit the community.”

“The Inns of Monterey and their superb staff have supported us greatly in our education programs in housing faculty for Monterey Jazz in the Schools, our annual Summer Jazz Camp, Concerts in the Schools, the Next Generation Jazz Festival, and other special events we hold throughout the year,” said Paul Contos, Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director. “We treasure the relationship and valued friendship we have with Inns of Monterey, as it assists us significantly in our educational mission!”

Monterey Jazz Festival’s easily scalable programs have been a model for arts education around the world by utilizing local and regional musicians to teach students the art of jazz, human interaction, leadership, responsibility, discipline, and democracy within a group setting. These programs also engage local residents, businesses and government entities by building a performing arts infrastructure that all members of the community can enjoy.

The clinicians also select members of the Festival’s Monterey County High School All-Star Bands, who appear locally, regionally, and internationally, and enjoy a busy summer touring season with performances locally, regionally and nationally. The annual tours are a beneficial experiential learning model for the young talented Monterey County musicians, where the road now becomes the classroom.

The Inns of Monterey has provided complimentary rooms to the Festival’s educators since 2010 at the Victorian Inn, the Monterey Bay Inn and Spindrift Inn on Cannery Row, and Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa, the first established hotel in Monterey.

“The six-year partnership with the Monterey Jazz Festival goes hand-in-hand with our ongoing efforts to support community and our commitment to education,” said Randy Venard, Vice President and General Manager of Inns of Monterey. “We are delighted to be a part of this rich history.”
