June 4, 2014; Monterey, California; Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce its two-week Summer Jazz Camp for middle and high school students, taking place at Monterey Peninsula College, June 9-20, 2014. This year, 110 students from 20 schools in Monterey County and beyond will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz study and performance with a star-studded line-up of professional musicians and educators. Through the generosity of its supporters, Monterey Jazz Festival provides subsidies for students in need to make the camp financially accessible.

Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp is an intensive immersion program for young jazz students to learn and develop jazz music skills and knowledge, with classes including big bands, small ensembles, vocal performance, instrumental master classes, and daily workshops on different music subjects. The camp also includes special sessions for students to attend combo rehearsals and theory classes. Camp staff expect enrollment of over 100 young musicians to participate in this valuable music endeavor, keeping classes and ensembles to a small size. The students, ranging in age from 12-18 years old, earn one unit of credit from Monterey Peninsula College at the completion of camp.

“Summer Jazz Camp 2014, presented by Monterey Jazz Festival will be ‘in full swing’ on June  9, and we anticipate fantastic students from Monterey County and beyond,” said Paul Contos, Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director. “Our faculty of highly-skilled jazz professionals and educators from across the U.S. will be on hand, and we are delighted to host master drummer Eric Harland as Artist-In-Residence from June 17-19. Four consecutive nights of public performances during the second week of camp highlight the intensive work done by many instrumental and vocal ensembles, and all are invited to hear the results of students and jazz in its creation!”

The Student Jam Session will take place at the Museum of Monterey at 5 Custom House Plaza on Monday, June 16, at 6 p.m., with an additional Vocal Mic Night on Tuesday, June 17, at 7 p.m., also at the Museum of Monterey. The Combos Concert will take place Wednesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at the Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium, with the Big Band and Vocal Concert taking place on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m, also at the Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium.

This year’s Summer Jazz Camp will be highlighted by the presence of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2014 Artist-In-Residence, drummer Eric Harland.  He last played the Monterey Jazz Festival with Dave Holland in 2013, and will appear at this year’s festival five times, performing with Charles Lloyd, Eric’s own group Voyager, with Sangam, featuring Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain, and with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra.

In addition to Mr. Harland, the camp’s roster of instructors features many of the finest jazz educators in the country. 2014 faculty include saxophonists Paul Contos, Paul Lucckesi, Virginia Mayhew, and Gary Meek; trumpeters Peck Allmond and Michael Galisatus; trombonist Robynn Amy, drummer Vince Lateano, bassist Scott Steed, guitarist Bruce Forman, pianist Eddie Mendenhall; and renowned vocalists Julia Dollison and Ashlee Varner. Committed to training the next generation of teachers, the camp also invites talented young instructors or alumni of the Festival’s jazz education programs to mentor younger students. In 2014, the Summer Jazz Camp welcomes back as Teaching Assistants drummer Dylan Aiello, violinist Noah Freedman, and saxophonist David Lilley, and camp interns trombonist Veronica Christie, and drummer Matt Hannas.

Registration for Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp through June 9 can be made by contacting Paul Contos at the Festival offices at 831.373.3366, or email [email protected].
