Slated for June 22-25 in Monterey
Monterey, California; June 9, 2015; Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce its two-week Summer Jazz Camp for middle and high school students, taking place at Monterey Peninsula College, June 15-26.
In 2015, over 100 students from 15 schools in Monterey County and beyond will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz study and performance with a star-studded lineup of professional musicians and educators. Through the generosity of its supporters, Monterey Jazz Festival provides subsidies for students in need to make the camp financially accessible.
Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp is an intensive immersion program for young jazz students to learn and develop jazz music skills and knowledge, with classes including big bands, small ensembles, vocal performance, instrumental master classes, and daily workshops on different music subjects. The camp also includes special sessions for students to attend combo rehearsals and theory classes. Camp staff expect enrollment of over 100 young musicians to participate in this valuable music endeavor, keeping classes and ensembles to a small size. The students, ranging in age from 12-18 years old, earn one unit of credit from Monterey Peninsula College at the completion of camp.
“We look forward to a motivating and informative jazz experience for our students, and expert mentoring from our longstanding family of jazz clinicians,” said Paul Contos, Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director.
This year’s Summer Jazz Camp will be highlighted by the presence of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2015 Artist-In-Residence, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra saxophonist Ted Nash. He last played at the Monterey Jazz Festival with the JLCO in 2009.
“We’re thrilled to work and play with Ted, who happens to be an alumnus of our Next Generation Jazz Orchestra,” continued Contos. He’ll be challenging our campers with some of his own compositions and sharing insights from a career spent playing in one of the world’s best big bands.”
In addition to Mr. Nash, the camp’s roster of instructors features many of the finest jazz educators in the country. 2015 faculty include saxophonists Paul Contos, Virginia Mayhew, and Gary Meek; trumpeters Peck Allmond and Michael Galisatus; trombonist Robynn Amy, drummer Vince Lateano, bassist Scott Steed, guitarist Bruce Forman, pianist Eddie Mendenhall; and renowned vocalist Matt Falker.
Committed to training the next generation of teachers, the camp also invites talented young instructors or alumni of the Festival’s jazz education programs to mentor younger students. In 2015, the Summer Jazz Camp welcomes back as teaching assistants Greg Fletcher, Glynis Davis, David Lilly, Micah Cabaccang, Jonah Svihus, and camp intern Henrique Carneiro.
During the second week of camp, public performances from the students are scheduled. The Museum of Monterey will again host both the Student Jam Session 5 Custom House Plaza on Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m., and the Vocal Solo Mic Night on Tuesday, June 23, at 6 p.m.
The Monterey Peninsula College Music Hall will host both the Combos Concert on Wednesday, June 24, at 7 p.m. and the Big Band and Vocal Concert on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m.
Registration for Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp through June 12 can be made by contacting Samantha Samuels at the Festival offices at 831.373.3366, or by emailing [email protected].
