The Monterey Jazz Festival (MJF) has been committed to providing all young people with access to high-quality music education opportunities for nearly a half-century. In 2019, MJF created the first Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo, a group of talented young women from across the United States, directed by the award-winning bassist, Katie Thiroux. Since their auspicious debut at the Jazz Education Network Convention in Reno in January, they have since performed at the 49th Next Generation Jazz Festival and will make five appearances at the 62nd Monterey Jazz Festival all weekend.
The 2019 members are Jayla Chee (bass, Belmont, Calif.); Summer Camargo (trumpet, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.); Veronica Leahy (alto saxophone, Charlotte, North Carolina); Hannah Mayer (piano, Oakland, Calif.); Carmen Murray (drums, San Diego, Calif.) and Gianna Pedregon (violin, Santa Ana, Calif.). Catch this dynamic group all weekend at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
In addition, Jayla Chee, Summer Camargo and Veronica Leahy are all in the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and its related combos. They will also be performing additional sets at MJF62.
