MONTEREY, Calif. (July 15, 2024) – The Monterey Jazz Festival, the world’s longest continuously-running jazz festival, proudly announces its lineup for the 67th  incarnation which happens September 27-29 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. The 87 shows on five stages include headliners and legends NEA Jazz Master Stanley Clarke, Rock & Roll, Gospel, and Blues Hall of Fame member Mavis Staples, multiple GRAMMY Award-winner Samara Joy, the Joshua Redman Group featuring Gabrielle Cavassa, iconic Mexican vocalist Lila Downs, renowned vocalist José James, SFJAZZ Collective and others. Ticket packages are on sale now, with prices holding steady from last year’s prices.

The 67th Monterey Jazz Festival marks the beginning of a new chapter of musical exploration under the guidance of new artistic director Darin Atwater, the first African American to lead the festival and only its third-ever artistic director.

Regarding the festival’s  Crescendo in Blue  theme, Atwater says “This remarkable rising of sight and sound is the crescendo of our collective spirits bathing in the blue notes of jazz, where we take all the challenges faced in daily life and find sweet release, if only for a few days, they return to us on the wings of blue birds smiling at us with dignity, elegance and of course, optimism.”

The Monterey Jazz Festival is renowned for its cutting-edge variety and diversity in performers. In addition to the Jimmy Lyons (main Arena) Stage, four additional stages throughout the fairgrounds will offer intimate settings to showcase a variety of world renowned performers, including: Berklee Jazz and Justice Quartet, Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble, Connected with Richie Goods and Chien Chien Lu, Ana Popovic and the FANTASTAFUNK Big Band, Yuko Mabuchi Trio, the Miguel Zenón and Luis Perdomo Duo, and Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble.

As an enduring example of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s ongoing commitment to youth music education, the festival will feature performances by the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, directed by pianist Gerald Clayton, and the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo, directed by bassist Katie Thiroux. Additionally, the Texas Southern University Gospel Choir returns for a Sunday performance with dynamic arranger-composer Tammy L. Hall, and North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble, two-time winners of the festival’s HBCU challenge will perform.

Pianist Jason Moran acts as the festival’s 2024 Artist-in-Residence and will appear each day of the festival with various groups—including a trio with tape loop artist BlankFor.ms; his longstanding trio The Bandwagon; as a special featured soloist with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra celebrating Duke Ellington’s 125th anniversary; and in conversation with journalist Ashley Kahn about Ellington’s legacy.

The festival’s 2024 Showcase Artist is Kyle Eastwood who makes his Arena stage debut as a lead performer, with Eastwood Symphonic, a collaboration of his jazz quintet and the Monterey Symphony orchestra performing a musical tribute to the films of his father, iconic actor/director Clint Eastwood. Those films include Gran Torino, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Fathers, and Bridges of Madison County. The orchestra will be led by Luxembourg composer and arranger Gast Waltzing.

Each year, the Monterey Jazz Festival commissions an artist to create an original composition to debut at the festival. Past commissioned artists include Oscar-winner Kris Bowers, Miho Hazama, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Wayne Shorter, and many others. The tradition continues with Robert Glasper (featuring Yebba) as the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2024 Commission Artist.

In another exciting return, gospel music takes to the Jimmy Lyons (Arena) Stage when the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama with special guest Bobby Rush, perform. Popular gospel music songwriter/producer/choir director Donald Lawrence & Company will also perform on the Jimmy Lyons (Arena) Stage.  John Nash and the Monterey Peninsula Gospel Choir will perform on the newly-named Tim Jackson Garden Stage.

Back by popular demand, Premier Club returns to the festival.  For an additional purchase, Premier Club offers an air-conditioned lounge space with viewing of Arena stage performances, hors-d’oeuvres, free soft drinks, and a no-host top shelf bar.

An exciting array of food options and craft vendors will also be available on the grounds with items for purchase.
