Special Fundraiser Benefits Jazz Education Programs of the Museum and Monterey Jazz Festival
Monterey, CA; June 10, 2017; The Museum of Making Music, in partnership with Monterey Jazz Festival is proud to present the acclaimed pianist and composer Chase Morrin on Saturday, July 15 for a special fundraising event to benefit the Museum and the Monterey Jazz Festival’s educational programs. Also appearing will be the Cool Cats, a San Diego youth jazz group led by Nate Mills, and The Young Lions, from the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory. Doors open at 6:30.

Morrin, a San Diego native, is a multiple student award winner and was a 2011 member of MJF’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, a flagship student ensemble of the festival, featuring the best high school jazz musicians in the country. That same year, in addition to earning a spot in the NGJO, he additionally won the MJF’s Next Generation Jazz Festival’s Composition Competition award and won the open combo category division, a triple-achievement that had never happened before—or since. He recently was commissioned by the Louisville Orchestra to compose and write a piano concerto, which he performed with the orchestra in April, 2016.
Morrin graduated from Harvard in 2015 with B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Neurobiology, and received a M.M. from New England Conservatory in 2016. Chase currently attends the Global Jazz Institute at Berklee College of Music and has garnered many accolades including awards from ASCAP and DownBeat Magazine.
The Young Lions, from the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, led by the school’s founder and Artistic Director, Gilbert Castellanos, was a 1989 and 1990 member of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra.
Monterey Jazz Festival Ambassador Avi Rossenfeld, one of the organizers of the event, felt that bringing the concert to San Diego would highlight a combination of jazz education and talented performers. “Jazz education shouldn’t just be learning about the past, as important as that is, but also about looking towards the future,” said Mr. Rossenfeld.
