Media representatives are invited to observe a master clinic by 2017 Artists-In-Residence, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Gerald Clayton from 11-11:45 am and big band and small group combo rehearsals from 12:45-2 pm

2017 MJF SUMMER JAZZ CAMP BACKGROUND INFORMATION
June 11–23 at Stevenson School, Pebble Beach

  • Summer Jazz Camp was founded in 1984 and has served 3000+ students since then.
  • 145 students are at the 2017 Summer Jazz Camp in Middle School and High School sessions. 50 students in grades 6-9 are at the first Middle School Jazz Camp. The High School Jazz Camp has 95 students in grades 9 through college freshman. 
  • 2017’s camp includes middle and high school students from Monterey County and beyond, including Aptos, Arcadia, Berkeley, Campbell, Capitola, Carmichael, Chico, Chualar, Gilroy, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek. Other students are from Iowa, Missouri, and Nevada.
  • In 2017, 38% of camp students receive scholarships from Monterey Jazz Festival, totaling almost $10,000.
  • Camp faculty includes MJF educators and saxophonists Paul Contos, Kirsten Strom, and Gary Meek; trumpeters Peck Allmond, Michael Galisatus and Kyle Athayde; trombonists Robynn Amy and Marty Wehner; drummers Vince Lateano and Alan Hall; bassists Scott Steed and Marika Galea; guitarists Pat Kelley and Bruce Forman; pianists Eddie Mendenhall and Bob Athayde; and vocalists Matt Falker and Janice Perl.
  • Camp includes instrumental master classes, performance clinics, big band rehearsals, “Play with the Pros,” small ensemble rehearsals, and more.
  • John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Gerald Clayton perform with MJF’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, September 17, at the 60th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival.
