MEDIA ADVISORY: World-Renowned Monterey Jazz Festival to Announce 60th Anniversary Lineup

Monterey, Calif., March 16, 2017; This September will see the 60th Anniversary edition of one of the world’s most popular and respected celebrations of jazz: the Monterey Jazz Festival, founded in 1958 by San Francisco radio broadcaster Jimmy Lyons. Since then, the festival has presented historic performances by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock, among many other jazz legends — alongside new discoveries who often went on to become legends in their own right.

On Thursday, March 30, Artistic Director Tim Jackson will announce the lineup he has curated to mark the festival’s 60th birthday.

“I am so happy and proud to be able to announce the great artists we will present this year,” said Jackson. “This will be a lineup worthy of Monterey’s history — and one that will make some history of its own.”

In addition to revealing the full lineup, Jackson will present a video highlighting footage from an upcoming MJF documentary, art quality photographs of Festival performers, and this year’s commissioned MJF poster. He’ll also offer thoughts on the Next Generation Jazz Festival for young artists, which will launch the following day, March 31.

In addition, Monterey-Salinas Transit CEO Carl Sedoryk will unveil updated designs for MST’s jazz-themed bus kiosks across Monterey, Seaside, and Sand City.
