June 5, 2013; Monterey, California; Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce its two-week Summer Jazz Camp for middle and high school students, taking place at Monterey Peninsula College, June 10-21, 2013. This year, 135 students from dozens of schools in Monterey County and beyond will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz study and performance with a star-studded line-up of professional musicians and educators. Through the generosity of its supporters, Monterey Jazz Festival provides subsidies for students in need to make the camp financially accessible.

Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp is an intensive immersion program for young jazz students to learn and develop jazz music skills and knowledge, with classes including big bands, small ensembles, vocal performance, instrumental master classes, and daily workshops on different music subjects. The camp also includes special sessions for students to attend combo rehearsals and theory classes. Camp staff expect enrollment of at least 135 young musicians to participate in this valuable music endeavor, keeping classes and ensembles to a small size. The students, ranging in age from twelve to eighteen years old, earn one unit of credit from Monterey Peninsula College at the completion of camp.

“Our Summer Jazz Camp follows a full and exciting year of jazz mentoring and teaching for all of our young musicians throughout Monterey County and beyond,” said Paul Contos, Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director. “Our Traveling Clinicians, all skilled jazz professionals, offer a full and comprehensive plate of jazz curriculum during Camp, with Master Classes, a multitude of rehearsals in big bands and small group combos, jazz theory and history; vocal jazz training and ensembles; and a jazz strings component. Added to all this is Artist-In-Residence, saxophonist Joe Lovano, who will visit the Camp June 18-20, presenting his talents and guidance for all campers. The final concerts during the second week of Camp are an exhilarating showcase of musical prowess from the many young musicians who have worked so diligently.”

The Student Jam Session will take place at the Museum of Monterey at 5 Custom House Plaza on Monday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m., with an additional Vocal Mic Night on Tuesday, June 18, at 7:00 p.m., also at the Museum of Monterey. The Combos Concert will take place Wednesday, June 19, at 7:00 p.m. at the Monterey Peninsula College Auditorium, with the Big Band and Vocal Concert taking place on Thursday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium in Pacific Grove.

This year’s Summer Jazz Camp will be highlighted by the presence of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2013 Artist-In-Residence, Joe Lovano.  Hailed by the New York Times as “one of the greatest musicians in jazz history,” GRAMMY® Award-winning saxophone giant Joe Lovano has had a distinguished career since the 1970s, working with such artists as Paul Motian, John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Michel Petrucciani, Lee Konitz, Abbey Lincoln, Tom Harrell, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman, Jim Hall, Bob Brookmeyer and many others. He last played the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2009, and will appear at this year’s festival five times.

In addition to Mr. Lovano, the camp’s roster of instructors features many of the finest jazz educators in the country. 2013 faculty include saxophonists Paul Contos, Gary Meek and Paul Lucckesi; trumpeters Peck Allmond and Michael Galisatus; trombonist Robynn Amy, drummer Vince Lateano, bassist Scott Steed, guitarist Bruce Forman, pianists Milton Fletcher and Eddie Mendenhall; and renowned vocalists Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh. Committed to training the next generation of teachers, the camp also invites talented young instructors or alumni of the Festival’s Jazz Ed Programs to mentor younger students. In 2013, the Summer Jazz Camp welcomes back as interns drummer Jesus Vega, violinist Noah Freedman, and saxophonist David Lilley to its faculty.
