March 19, 2012, Monterey, CA; The Monterey Jazz Festival announces a Benefit Reception in Dallas, scheduled for Thursday, March 22, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at the Samuel Lynne Gallery, located at 1105 Dragon Street in Dallas, hosted by Monterey Jazz Festival Ambassador, Diane Mitchella. Music will be provided by faculty from the University of North Texas, including pianist Stefan Karlsson and his trio, featuring drummer Ed Soph and guitarist Fred Hamilton.

“I am excited to be able to promote jazz through the Monterey Jazz Festival and its world-class national education programs which inspires student musicians from schools like Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas,” said Diane Mitchella, Dallas-based Ambassador for the Monterey Jazz Festival.  “This is a great opportunity for our community to learn about Monterey’s Education programs, and to experience the art of live jazz.”

Monterey’s connection with the Dallas area includes the Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts, whose groups have won the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Festival three times in the past. The school’s Combo is a finalist at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in 2012. Roy Hargrove, a Booker T. Washington alumnus, recently performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2010 with his big band.

Chris Doss, the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Managing Director, also has ties to Dallas, most recently as Marketing Director for AT&T Performing Arts Center, previously Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, and as a graduate of the University of North Texas.

The purpose of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Regional Communities and Ambassador Program is to expand and deepen community awareness of and support for jazz by empowering individuals to take a leadership role in enriching life through jazz.
