Monterey, Calif., March 24, 2015; The Monterey Jazz Festival will exhibit historical material, in partnership with the Museum of Monterey, from March 20 through May 1. Included in the exhibit will be historical photos, posters, clothing, and memorabilia from the Festival’s 58-year history, including a drum set once owned by Shelly Manne. Admission to the exhibit is free, and is located at the Stanton Center at 5 Custom House Plaza in downtown Monterey, adjacent to Fisherman’s Wharf.
“It is an honor for the Monterey History and Art Association to be able to collaborate with the world-renowned Monterey Jazz Festival and allow the public to see this wonderful exhibit,” said Nancy Selfridge, Monterey History and Art Association Board Member.
“This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to educate the community and visitors to Monterey from around the world about the legacy of the Monterey Jazz Festival,” said Colleen Bailey, MJF Managing Director. “We invite people to visit the exhibition at the Museum of Monterey and to attend the Next Generation Jazz Festival events at the museum to witness history in the making.”
In addition, from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, April 9, the Museum of Monterey-Stanton Center will host a reception honoring the 58 years of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Admission is free and open to the public.
The exhibit coincides with the Next Generation Jazz Festival Presented by Monterey Jazz Festival, March 27-29. With more than 1200 students in 90 bands from 12 states performing over 130 performances and clinics all weekend in five downtown locations, it is the largest gathering of student musicians Northern California outside of the Monterey Jazz Festival itself. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
In addition to the exhibit at the Museum of Monterey, 16 free performances from Next Generation Jazz Festival participants will take place at the Museum’s Custom House Plaza location during on Saturday March 28, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ensembles range from middle school to college big bands from California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Washington State.
The nonprofit Museum of Monterey, housed at the Monterey History & Maritime Museum on Custom House Plaza, the Mexican-era adobe Casa Serrano, and the Mayo Hayes O’Donnell Library, holds historical collections about Monterey, showcasing historic events, early California art, costume and textiles, decorative arts, model ships, historical objects, rare books, original letters, media, and photographs, all available free of charge to scholars and researchers of early California history.
The Next Generation Jazz Festival begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 27 with the Opening Night Concert entitled Remembering Clark Terry: A Swingin’ Celebration, dedicated to the memory of the legendary trumpeter and jazz educator Clark Terry. The concert features performances by the Festival’s team of internationally-renowned artists and competition judges. Opening the concert at 7:30 p.m. is the Marika Galea Quartet from Berklee College of Music. Gold Circle Tickets ($50) include an invitation to the exclusive post-concert “meet and greet” dessert reception with the performers, Monterey Jazz Festival judges, and adjudicators.
