Monterey Jazz Festival Wins Best Festival in the 2013 JazzTimes Readers Poll

Monterey, Calif.; January 27, 2014; Monterey Jazz Festival is pleased to announce that it was voted as the #1 Festival in the 2013 JazzTimes Readers Poll in the “Best of the Jazz Industry” category. The 56th Monterey Jazz Festival took top honors over the Newport, Montreal and North Sea jazz festivals respectively.

“The Monterey Jazz Festival appreciates the tremendous show of support from the jazz community as it affirms our commitment to the jazz tradition,” said Tim Jackson, Monterey Jazz Festival Artistic Director. “With a 57-year legacy behind us, we are committed to the future and keeping MJF as a standard-bearer for jazz festivals worldwide.”

Monterey Jazz Festival has previously won the JazzTimes Readers Poll in 2006, 2007 and 2008, with runner-up positions in 2010 and 2012, and placing #3 in 2011.

The JazzTimes Readers Poll, established in 1990, is a fan-based online poll, and covers a variety of categories. Some of the top musicians who performed at the 57th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival were also voted as winners or in the top four, including Artist of the Year (Wayne Shorter, #1; Gregory Porter, #2; Diana Krall, #4); Best New Release (Wayne Shorter Quartet: Without a Net, #1); Best Vocal Release (Gregory Porter, Liquid Spirit, #1, and George Benson, Inspiration, #3); Best Acoustic Group (Wayne Shorter Quartet, #1); Best Big Band (Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, #3).

“At this festival in particular, this is a soulful community of artists and fans,” said GRAMMY winner Gregory Porter, in an interview with Amoeba Records after his 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival opening night performance on the Jimmy Lyons Stage.

Other MJF/56 artists in the poll include David Sanborn (#2 Alto Saxophone); Bobby Hutcherson (#2 Vibraphone); Dr. Lonnie Smith (#2 Organ); Diana Krall (#1 Female Vocalist); Dave Holland (#4 Bassist); Gregory Porter (#2 Male Vocalist);and Bobby McFerrin (#4 Male Vocalist).
