“This summer’s tour to Washington, DC is a momentous and highly significant opportunity and privilege for our wonderfully talented Monterey County high school musicians,” said Paul Contos, Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director. “We are so excited and jubilant for these invitations to perform, and to be able to provide this experience to our ensembles in our nation’s capital.”

As part of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s year-round jazz education programs to enhance the musical training and experience of the most gifted young musicians in the County, the Monterey County High School All-Star Band and Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble offer 32 selected Monterey County high school students the opportunity to study and perform at an advanced level to enhance their respective school music programs.

Members of the High School All-Star Band, led by Monterey Jazz Festival Education Director and saxophonist Paul Contos, are selected by the Festival’s Traveling Clinicians who visit Monterey schools once a month during the school year for one-on-one instruction in jazz, and include musicians from Carmel, Gonzalez, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Stevenson, and York high schools.

The Monterey County High School Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Rob Klevan, showcases Monterey County’s best vocalists, also selected by the Traveling Clinicians, and features vocalists from Carmel, Gonzalez, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Stevenson, Trinity Christian, and York high schools.

The Festival’s honor groups have obtained worldwide recognition and rave reviews for their high level of performance. Each summer, the Monterey County All-Star Band and Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble take to the road for the experience of performing in settings beyond the borders of Monterey County and California. Past musical tours have included concert presentations at jazz festivals and other venues throughout Japan, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
