Robert Glasper, Jason Moran and Gerald Clayton have all made strong musical contributions to Monterey -- Robert has brought cutting edge groups in the past, Jason has honored Fats Waller and Erroll Garner and wrote MJF’s 2009 commission piece, and Gerald has acted as our 60th anniversary Artist-in-Residence in addition to being a MJF favorite for years.
If you have seen their Monterey shows, we think you will love these newer piano artists that are appearing at #MJF67!
Hiromi last appeared at MJF54 in 2011, so we want to remind you how incredible she is. Her new quartet, Hiromi’s Sonicwonder, goes beyond her regular power trio configuration with the addition of trumpeter (and Next Generation Jazz Orchestra alum) Adam O’Farrill, who was still in high school when she was last at Monterey! The Arts Desk (UK) wrote of her recent show at the London Jazz Festival “It was as breathtaking for its energy as for its brilliant versatility.” Don’t miss Hiromi’s Sonicwonder!
MJF patrons may remember Jahari’s electric performance with Derrick Hodge at MJF62 in 2019 when he was still in college. Since then, he’s toured with Stanley Clarke and others, but in 2023 he achieved widespread recognition when he won the Herbie Hancock International Jazz Institute Piano Competition. He’ll be kicking off the West End Stage at MJF67 on September 27!
Sean appeared at MJF66 in 2023 with vocalist Catherine Russell, and now he’s back to make his debut as a leader. The North Carolina native brings a southern flavor to his music, especially with his first record, The Southern Suite. "Be on the lookout for this kid," says Branford Marsalis!
Japanese-born pianist Yuko Mabuchi makes her debut at MJF67. Classically trained, Yuko arrived to jazz in her teens and relocated to Los Angeles. With impeccable taste, finesse, and swing. Yuko has developed a style all her own. LAJazzScenes has praised her "enormous energy and spirited performance."
